How to choose the right Google Business Profile category

Your primary category tells Google what your business is. Here is how to pick it, when to add extra categories, and the mistakes to avoid.

Short answer: choose the one primary category that describes what your business is, not everything it sells. Then add a small number of additional categories only for other core services customers genuinely come to you for.

Google lists "what kind of business you are" among the details that help it match your profile to relevant local searches. Your primary category carries the most weight, and it also unlocks category-specific features such as menus, bookings or particular attributes.

Primary vs additional categories

  • Primary category: one only. It should finish the sentence "We are a…". A dental practice is a Dentist, even if it also offers teeth whitening.
  • Additional categories: optional. Use them for distinct services that are a real part of the business — for example a bakery that also runs a café area might add Café.
  • Not a category: individual products, locations, adjectives or keywords. "Best plumber Wolverhampton" is not a category, and adding keywords to your business name is against Google's guidelines.

A five-minute way to decide

  1. Write down the three phrases customers actually use when they ring you ("emergency plumber", "boiler repair").
  2. In your profile, start typing each one in the category field and note the exact categories Google offers. You can only pick from Google's list.
  3. Pick the most specific option that matches your main service. Italian restaurant is more useful than Restaurant.
  4. Search those phrases in Google Maps from your area and look at which categories nearby businesses use. This tells you how Google groups your market — it is not a rule to copy.
  5. Add additional categories only where you would be happy for a customer searching that term to land on you.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing a category for a service you do occasionally. It can put you in front of people you will disappoint.
  • Adding every loosely related category. More categories do not make a profile more relevant; accuracy does.
  • Changing categories frequently. Treat the category as a stable description. Changes can trigger re-review of your profile.
  • Forgetting services. Once the category is right, list your actual services too — see how to set up services and service areas.

Checklist

  • Primary category finishes "We are a…"
  • Every additional category is a service you offer every week
  • No keywords added to the business name
  • Services list matches the categories
  • Category-specific attributes reviewed afterwards
