Setting up services and service areas for an Indian Google business listing

How Indian businesses should list services in customers' own words and set accurate service areas by city or state on their Google listing.

Short answer: list the services customers actually book, described in the words they use, and if you travel to them — an electrician, a caterer, a pest control team — set service areas that match where you truly work, hiding your address if customers never visit it.

A Google my business listing that only shows a category and a phone number leaves a customer guessing whether you actually do the specific job they need. Services close that gap directly.

Listing services in customers' own words

Rather than one vague line like "Electrical work," break it down: "Fan and light installation," "Wiring for new construction," "Inverter and stabiliser repair." Each service can carry a short, honest description, and a starting price if you choose to publish one. Customers searching from a phone in traffic decide fast — specific service names match specific searches far better than a single broad category.

Service areas: getting the setup right

Two common situations:

  • Storefront businesses — a restaurant, a salon, a clinic — where customers visit you. Your address should be visible and accurate, matching your signage and your PIN code exactly.
  • Service-area businesses — plumbers, electricians, event caterers, home tutors, pest control — where you travel to the customer. Here you set specific areas, typically by city, locality or a defined radius, rather than showing a home address customers never visit.

Set the areas you genuinely cover — a caterer who realistically serves Hyderabad and its immediate surrounding areas should not list the whole of Telangana, since Google expects service areas to reflect real, current coverage.

Hybrid businesses

Many Indian businesses do both: a salon with a shopfront that also sends staff for bridal appointments, or a workshop that repairs on-site and also collects equipment for larger jobs. List the storefront address as normal and add the service area separately for the part of the business that travels — being clear about which service falls into which category avoids confusing a customer about whether they need to visit you or wait for you.

Keeping this current

Review your service list every few months. A business that expanded into a neighbouring state, or dropped a service it no longer offers, should update both the services list and the service area to match — leaving an outdated service area live invites enquiries from a state you no longer cover, wasting everyone's time.

Where category and services meet

Your primary category, covered in our guide on choosing a category, sets the broad description; services fill in the specific detail underneath it. Get both right and a customer can tell within seconds whether you do exactly what they need.
