Services and Service Areas: Setting Up a US Google Business Profile Correctly

How US businesses should list services and set service areas by ZIP code or state, whether you're a storefront, service-area business or hybrid.

Short answer: list the services customers actually book, described the way they'd say it on the phone, with a short description for each. If you travel to customers instead of (or in addition to) receiving them at an address, set service areas by ZIP code or city that reflect where you truly work, and hide your address if customers never visit it.

Services

Services spell out exactly what you do within your category. An HVAC contractor might list furnace repair, AC installation and duct cleaning as separate services rather than one vague line.

How to write them well:

  1. Use the exact words customers use on the phone, not internal jargon.
  2. Add a one- or two-sentence description: what's included, and who it's for.
  3. Add a price or "from" price only if you're prepared to honor it.
  4. Remove services you no longer actually offer.

Storefront, service-area or hybrid — pick the right type

Google recognizes three setups:

  • Storefront: customers come to you. Show your street address.
  • Service-area business: you go to customers — a landscaper or mobile detailer, for example. Hide the address if customers never visit it, and set service areas instead.
  • Hybrid: both apply. Show the address and also set service areas.

Choosing service areas that hold up

  • Pick towns, cities or ZIP codes you genuinely cover, not an aspirational radius.
  • Google's help page explains reasonable limits on how far a service area should extend — don't list a state you'd actually turn down work in.
  • Service areas describe where you work; they aren't a shortcut to appearing in a city you don't actually serve, and misrepresenting this breaks Google's guidelines.

Common mistakes

  • Showing a home address customers were never meant to visit.
  • One vague catch-all service called "General work."
  • Copying a competitor's service list instead of describing your actual offer.

Checklist

  • Business type set correctly (storefront, service-area or hybrid)
  • Address hidden if customers don't visit it
  • Service areas match the ZIP codes or states you actually work in
  • Each service has a clear, honest description
  • Any listed prices are ones you'll actually honor

Where Local SEO AI helps

The business profile workspace keeps services, hours, attributes and photos together in one place and flags gaps before they cost you a call. You can also store product and service details once and reuse them when drafting AI content — this catalogue supports content creation; it's not a live sync with Google's own product listings, and Local SEO AI remains software rather than a Google partner. Next, review your profile's attributes, or check local guidance for Austin and Chicago service businesses. See pricing, billed in GBP (£).

For wider marketing guidance aimed at US small businesses, the U.S. Small Business Administration's marketing and sales guide is a useful, free starting point.
