Profile accuracy
Local SEO for small businesses: a practical guide
Local SEO helps nearby customers find and choose your business on Google Search and Maps, based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, with the Google Business Profile as the main driver of map results. You can influence relevance and prominence through accurate details and genuine reviews, but not a searcher's distance from you.

Short answer: local SEO is the work of helping nearby customers find and choose your business when they search on Google Search and Google Maps. Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the place they searched), and prominence (how well known your business is, including reviews and information found across the web). You can influence relevance and prominence. You cannot change distance.
How does local SEO actually work?
When someone searches "plumber" or "coffee near me", Google shows a map with a small set of businesses, then ordinary website results below it. The map results come mostly from Google Business Profiles. The website results come from your site and others.
That gives local SEO two halves:
| Part | What it covers | Who usually owns it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Name, category, hours, services, photos, reviews, posts | The business owner or manager |
| Your website | Service pages, contact details, location information, page speed | Whoever manages your site |
Other websites that mention your name, address and phone number (often called citations — directories, local associations, suppliers) can support prominence. Keeping those details consistent everywhere (sometimes called NAP consistency) helps customers and avoids confusion. Google does not publish a formula for how much each of these matters.
What is the Google profile workflow for local SEO?
Most small businesses get the most practical benefit from keeping their profile complete and current:
- Claim and verify your profile so you can edit it.
- Choose the most specific primary category that describes your main business, then add a few accurate secondary categories. See choosing your category.
- Complete the basics: hours (including special hours), phone, website, services, service areas and attributes that are true.
- Add real photos of your premises, team and work.
- Ask every customer for a review the same way, and reply to reviews. See how to reply to Google reviews.
- Post updates when something changes: offers, events, new services.
Follow Google's guidelines for representing your business. Adding keywords to your business name, or using an address you do not operate from, can get a profile suspended.
What does the website side of local SEO involve?
You do not need a complex site. Google's SEO Starter Guide focuses on basics: pages that clearly describe what you do, crawlable links, descriptive titles, and content written for people. For a local business, that usually means:
- a page for each main service, written in plain language
- your address or service area and contact details on the site, matching your profile
- optional LocalBusiness structured data, which Google documents for business details
Local SEO AI manages the Google profile side. It does not build or edit your website, and it does not submit citations to directories.
What does a realistic first-month plan for local SEO look like?
This is an example plan for a single-location business with a few hours a week. Adjust it to your situation.
| Week | Focus | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Verify profile, check category, hours, phone, website | Every field is accurate and matches your website |
| 2 | Add services, service areas, attributes and 10+ real photos | A new customer could understand what you offer |
| 3 | Start asking every customer for a review; reply to all existing reviews | Review requests are part of your normal checkout or follow-up |
| 4 | Publish one or two posts; note calls, directions and website clicks as a baseline | You have a starting point to compare next month |
Measure against your own baseline. Profile performance figures (calls, direction requests, website clicks) show activity, not confirmed sales, and results vary with season and search demand.
What should I not expect from local SEO?
Nobody can guarantee a position on Google Maps or in AI answers. Distance and the searcher's location change results street by street. A good profile makes you a stronger, clearer choice; it does not force Google to show you.
What should be on my local SEO checklist?
- Profile verified and owned by the business
- Specific primary category chosen
- Hours, special hours, phone and website correct
- Services and service areas complete
- Real photos added
- Every customer asked for a review the same way
- Reviews replied to
- Details match your website
- Baseline performance noted

Frequently asked questions
What is local SEO in simple terms?
It is the work of helping nearby customers find and choose your business when they search on Google Search and Google Maps, mainly through your Google Business Profile and your website.
What are the three factors Google uses for local results?
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search, distance is how far you are from the searcher, and prominence reflects how well known your business is.
Can I influence where I rank in Google Maps results?
You can influence relevance and prominence by keeping your profile accurate and complete and by earning genuine reviews. You cannot change distance, since that depends on where the searcher is.
Do I need a website to do local SEO?
A website helps, since it covers service pages, contact details and location information, but your Google Business Profile is the main driver of map results. Start with the profile if you can only do one.
