Short answer: Before attempting to verify again, sign in to your Google Account and check the specific message displayed on your business profile dashboard. Verification hurdles—such as a pending review, a rejected video, or an ownership conflict—each require a distinct set of next steps. You must use the verification methods Google provides for your specific business; third-party software cannot bypass these security protocols or guarantee a specific approval date.

This guide focuses on the initial verification and re-verification process within the United States market. If your profile is already live but you are looking to boost your rank in the local pack, see our Maps visibility guide. If your profile has been taken down entirely, refer to our suspension and appeals guide.

Start with the message, not another attempt

When verification fails or stalls, the instinct is often to delete the profile and start over. In the United States, this can lead to duplicate listings that confuse the algorithm and potential customers. Instead, sign in and record the exact wording Google shows.

Google determines the available verification methods based on your business category and location. Common methods in the US include a postcard sent to your ZIP code, a phone call or text to your business cell, or a video upload. Review times typically take up to five business days. If you see a Review issues message, Google has identified a discrepancy that you must fix before trying again. For official documentation, see Google's verification guidance.

To keep your team organized, use a single case note for each location—whether you are managing one shop in Houston or a franchise across Chicago.

RecordWhat to write
ProfileBusiness name and the correct Google Maps URL
StatusThe exact error or status message (e.g., "Pending Verification")
AttemptThe method used (Video, Postcard, Phone) and the date
Evidence GapSpecific missing elements mentioned by Google
ResponsibilityThe specific team member assigned to the next step
Follow-upA date to re-check status and any Google Support case IDs

Note: Never include sensitive data like passwords or the 6-digit verification codes in shared team notes. These codes should only be entered directly into the Google Business Profile interface.

Prepare your business details for US compliance

Before you record a video or request a postcard, ensure your data is accurate. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) monitors deceptive marketing practices, and this extends to how businesses represent themselves online. Ensure your business name matches your legal registration and physical signage. Do not add "marketing keywords" to your name if they are not part of your real-world branding.

If you are a service-area business (SAB)—such as a plumber in Los Angeles or an electrician in Dallas—you must follow specific rules. You should not list a home address if customers do not visit you there. Instead, define your service area by ZIP code, city, or county. For more, see Google's business guidelines and our services and service-area guide.

If Google offers video verification

Video verification is increasingly common for US-based businesses. This must be a live, continuous, and unedited recording. You cannot upload a pre-recorded marketing clip or a video generated by AI.

  • For Shopfronts: Show your street sign, the building exterior, and your permanent business signage. You must also show "proof of management," such as opening the door with your keys or accessing a point-of-sale system.
  • For Service-Area Businesses: Show your branded vehicle, tools of the trade, and proof of your business registration or a utility bill matching the name on the profile.

Avoid filming sensitive items like customer credit cards or private documents. These requirements are detailed in Google's video verification instructions.

Worked example: Illustrative HVAC Business in Austin

Note: This is an illustrative example, not a real customer case or a guarantee of results.

A heating and air conditioning company in Austin attempts to verify their profile. They are a service-area business and do not have a retail storefront.

  1. The Problem: Their video verification was rejected because they only filmed the interior of their home office.
  2. The Fix: The owner prepared a new video. They started outside to show the street sign, then filmed their work van (clearly wrapped with their logo and phone number), and finally showed a specialized HVAC manifold gauge used in their daily work.
  3. The Result: By providing "proof of equipment" and "location identifiers" as required by Google, they demonstrated the business was a legitimate local operation. They did not need to show a physical office address to the public to satisfy the verification requirement.

If someone else owns the existing profile

If you find your business is already listed but managed by a previous employee or a different agency, do not simply create a new profile. This creates a conflict that can block verification. Use Google's ownership request guide to ask the current owner for access. In the US, the current owner has three days to respond to your request through the automated system. If they ignore it, you may be given the option to prove ownership through the standard verification methods.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if my postcard never arrives at my US address? If your postcard hasn't arrived within 14 days, check that your ZIP code and suite number are exactly as recorded by the USPS. Do not edit your business name or category while waiting, as this will void the original code. If a second attempt fails, you should contact Google Support to request an alternative method like a live video call.

How do I handle verification during US public holidays? Google's manual review teams may experience delays during major public holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Independence Day. If you submit your verification evidence just before a holiday, allow for an additional 2-3 business days beyond the standard five-day window. Ensure your "holiday hours" are also updated on your profile to reflect any temporary closures during these periods.

Does the FTC regulate Google Business Profile reviews and information? Yes. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has strict guidelines against deceptive reviews and "review gating." When verifying your profile, ensure all information is truthful. Providing false location data or using "dummy" addresses to rank in different cities is considered a violation of both Google's terms and US consumer protection standards regarding honest advertising.

Which US local directories help with verification? While Google verification is a standalone process, having consistent Information across major US directories can help establish trust. Ensure your Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) are identical on platforms like Yelp, the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and Yellow Pages. If Google's automated systems see matching data on these authoritative sites, it may reduce the likelihood of your profile being flagged for additional manual review.

What Local SEO AI can and cannot do

Local SEO AI, a product of Let's Connect, helps you centralize and optimize your business profile details. We provide the tools to audit your data and manage review replies, but we cannot bypass Google's security steps.

Our platform is billed in GBP (£). Our live connection to Google's API is currently awaiting final approval; until then, you should use our platform to organize your content before manually updating your verified Google profile. Verification is a security step and does not guarantee a specific ranking or revenue outcome.
