Google Business Profile verification in Canada: A guide

Learn how to fix stuck Google Business Profile verification in Canada. Expert tips for video evidence, ownership requests, and local SEO.

Short answer: Before attempting a new verification, check the specific status message on your Google Business Profile. Whether you have a pending review, a rejected video, or an ownership conflict, each requires a unique path. Use the official methods offered by Google for your specific profile; software tools cannot bypass these requirements or guarantee a specific verification date.

This guide focuses on the verification process for businesses operating within Canada. It does not cover reinstatement. If your dashboard indicates your profile is suspended or disabled, please refer to our suspension and appeals guide. If you are already verified but are struggling to appear in local searches, consult our Maps visibility guide.

Start with the message, not another attempt

Sign in to the Google Account linked to your business and open the profile. Document the exact wording shown, the date of your last submission, and the method used (e.g., postcard, phone, or video).

Google determines which verification methods are available for your business. You cannot choose an alternative method, and some Canadian businesses may be required to complete more than one step. Once submitted, a manual review by Google typically takes up to five business days, though it can take longer during a statutory holiday period. If the "Get verified" button reappears, you must follow the instructions to try again. A "Review issues" status following a video upload means specific evidence was missing. These steps are based on Google's verification guidance.

We recommend maintaining a single case note for your team rather than relying on screenshots stored on various staff cells.

RecordWhat to write

Never include passwords, verification codes, or sensitive financial documents in a shared internal note.

Prepare your Canadian business details before submitting evidence

Ensure your profile matches your physical reality. Google's guidelines require a real-world business name, an accurate address or service area, and generally only one profile per business. Do not create a duplicate listing to bypass a verification delay.

If you are a service-area business (SAB)—such as a plumber in Ottawa or a locksmith in Edmonton—and you do not serve customers at your home address, ensure you follow the service-area rules. You should hide your home address and instead define the regions you serve by province, city, or postal code. Review Google's business guidelines and our services and service-area guide.

Our recommendation is to perform a check: can your staff explain any discrepancy between the profile, your physical signage, and your business registration? Resolve these mismatches before attempting verification. For a more comprehensive review, use our manual profile audit.

If Google offers video verification

Google often requires a live, unedited recording of at least 30 seconds, captured via a mobile cell through the Google Business Profile interface. AI-generated or edited promotional videos will be rejected.

For a storefront in Toronto or Montreal, show your location (including street signs or nearby landmarks), permanent signage that matches your profile name exactly, and proof of management (such as using a key to open the door). For service-area businesses in Vancouver or Calgary, show your branded vehicle, specialized equipment, and proof of your business registration or tools. Ensure you do not record faces or private customer data. See Google's video verification instructions.

Worked example: Illustrative Calgary service business

Note: This is an illustrative example of the process, not a real customer case or a guarantee of results.

A landscaping company in Calgary recently moved offices. Their profile became unverified during the address update. They were prompted for video verification.

  1. Preparation: The owner gathered their Calgary business licence, a utility bill matching the new address, and parked their branded truck in the driveway.
  2. The Walkthrough: They started the video showing the street name sign at the intersection, panned to the office building number, used their cell to show themselves unlocking the main office door, and briefly panned over their equipment and the business licence on the wall.
  3. Outcome: By showing three distinct categories—location, evidence of operation, and proof of management—they provided the specific markers Google looks for in the Canadian market.

If your video is rejected, use the "Review issues" prompt to see what was missing. You will likely need to record a new video that includes the original evidence plus the missing elements.

If someone else owns the existing profile

In Canada, it is common to find that a former employee or a previous marketing agency still holds primary ownership of a profile. You cannot fix this with a verification video. You must follow Google's ownership request guide.

For physical storefronts, find the listing on Maps and select "Claim this business." The current owner has three days to respond. If they deny the request or do not respond, Google may provide an option for you to prove your relationship to the business. For service-area businesses, the process often requires contacting Google Support directly.

When you still cannot complete verification

If you have exhausted the automated methods, use the support link provided in your Google Business Profile dashboard. Keep your verification codes private; Google will never ask you for them over the phone, and they should not be shared with third parties.

When contacting support, provide: - Your public Google Maps URL. - The exact error or status message. - A summary of the methods already tried. - Photos of your permanent signage and a neutral piece of evidence, like a Canadian business registration document.

What Local SEO AI can and cannot do

Local SEO AI, a product of Let's Connect, helps you centralize and optimize your business profile details. However, our software cannot bypass Google's security protocols, choose your verification method, or influence the speed of Google's manual reviews.

Use our platform to manage your review replies and track performance once verification is complete. Our pricing is transparent and billed in GBP (£). Verification is a security requirement by Google and is not a guarantee of a top ranking in local search results.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my verification during Canadian statutory holidays? Google's manual review teams may experience delays during major Canadian holidays such as Canada Day, Labour Day, or Thanksgiving. If you submit a verification video or request a postcard just before a **statutory holiday**, expect the standard five-day window to be extended. Always check your dashboard for updates rather than submitting multiple duplicate requests which can flag your account for suspicious activity.

Does the Competition Bureau of Canada regulate Google reviews? Yes, the **Competition Bureau** oversees the *Competition Act*, which prohibits misleading representations, including fake or deceptive online reviews. When verifying your profile and managing reviews, ensure you are not engaging in "astroturfing" (creating fake positive reviews). Google's verification process is partly designed to ensure that only legitimate business owners can manage these public-facing representations, maintaining market integrity as per Canadian law.

Which local directories should I use to support my verification? While Google verification is an internal process, having consistent "NAP" (Name, Address, Phone) data across the web can help establish your business's legitimacy. In Canada, ensure your details are consistent on local directories like Yellow Pages Canada, Yelp, and the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Use your full **postal code** and consistent **province** abbreviations across all platforms to help search engines associate your digital footprint with your physical location.

Why is my postal code causing a verification error? Ensure your **postal code** is entered in the standard Canadian format (A1A 1A1) with a space in the middle. If Google's map pin drops in the wrong location despite a correct address, manually adjust the pin during the verification setup. For businesses in new developments or rural areas, Google may require more extensive video evidence because their mapping data has not yet been updated with your specific street address.
