How to improve your Google Maps ranking (and why you might not appear)

What actually affects Google Maps and local results, what a business can change versus distance, how to measure carefully, and how to troubleshoot not appearing.

By Local SEO AI editorial team · Published · Updated

Short answer: Google says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. To improve how often you appear on Google Maps, focus on what you control — an accurate, specific and complete profile, genuine reviews with replies, and consistent information on your website and elsewhere. You cannot control where the searcher is, and no one can guarantee a Maps position.

What you can change vs what you cannot

FactorCan you change it?What to do
RelevanceYesSpecific primary category, complete services, accurate description
ProminencePartly, over timeGenuine reviews, replies, consistent listings, a useful website
DistanceNoAccept it; do not use fake addresses or virtual offices
Searcher's location and wordingNoMeasure from several places and for several terms

Using an address you do not staff, or adding keywords to your business name, breaks Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended. It is not a shortcut.

Google Maps SEO: the practical steps

  1. Get the category right. It is one of the clearest relevance signals you control. See choosing your category.
  2. Complete every relevant field: hours, services, service areas, attributes, photos. See services and service areas and attributes.
  3. Ask every customer for a review, consistently. Google's own tips encourage asking for reviews and replying to them. Never filter out unhappy customers. See asking without gating.
  4. Reply to reviews, including critical ones. See how to reply.
  5. Keep your website consistent with your profile: same name, phone and address or area, and a page for each main service.
  6. Keep the profile current with posts and photos when things change.

"Near me" searches

People type "near me", but Google already uses location. You do not need to add "near me" to your name or pages — doing so to your business name breaks the guidelines. Being relevant and accurate is what helps for these searches.

Measuring carefully

A single "rank" number is misleading because results change with the searcher's exact location. Two useful approaches:

  • Nearby comparison: see how your rating, review count and category compare with businesses around you.
  • Rank grid: sample where you appear for one search term at points across an area, and repeat over time.

These answer different questions; see rank grid vs nearby comparison. Also track profile calls, direction requests and website clicks against your own baseline — see performance metrics. Change one thing at a time where possible, and allow several weeks before judging.

Troubleshooting: my business isn't showing on Google Maps

Work through these in order:

  1. Is the profile verified? Unverified profiles may not appear. Check verification status.
  2. Is it suspended or disabled? Look for a notice in your profile manager.
  3. Are you searching for your exact name? If you do not appear for your own name, it is usually a verification, suspension or duplicate problem, not a ranking one.
  4. Are you searching from far away? Distance matters. Try searching from near your business or service area.
  5. Is there a duplicate profile? Duplicates can split reviews and confuse results.
  6. Was something edited? Check for recent changes to category, address or hours you did not make.
  7. Is it a very competitive search? For broad terms in busy areas, appearing in the top few map results is hard; focus on accuracy, reviews and more specific services.

If the profile is suspended, follow Google's reinstatement process rather than creating a new profile.

Where Local SEO AI helps

Local comparisons and map scans show nearby businesses and, once activated, sampled map positions over time. Review requests give every customer the same branded link, QR code or NFC card. Map scans require activation, and the live Google connection is awaiting approval.
