Rank Grids vs Nearby Comparisons: Reading Local Visibility for US Businesses
US business owners often confuse a rank grid with a nearby competitor comparison. Here's what each actually measures and when to use which.

Short answer: a nearby comparison shows you how your profile stacks up against businesses customers see around you right now. A rank grid samples where your profile appears for one search term at many points across a map. They answer different questions, and neither one is a guarantee of what any individual customer in Denver, Chicago or Miami actually sees when they search.
Google states local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance alone means results shift block by block, which is exactly why a single "we rank #3" claim can be misleading for a business covering a whole metro area.
Nearby competitor comparison
What it is: a list of businesses near you in the same category, showing public information like rating and review count.
Good for: - Seeing whether your review count is far behind competitors in your ZIP code. - Spotting profiles with noticeably more photos or completed details. - Choosing a realistic next step, like consistently asking every eligible customer for a review rather than only the happy ones.
Not good for: telling you your actual search position. A nearby list is not a ranking.
Rank grid
What it is: the same search term checked at a grid of points around a location, recording where your profile shows up at each point, at the moment of the check.
Good for: - Seeing how far from your address you still appear for a given term. - Comparing the same term over time using the identical grid.
Not good for: - Predicting what one specific customer sees — results are personalized and change constantly. - Comparing across different search terms or grid sizes. - Proving a single change "caused" a movement in position.
Which one to run for a US business
| Question | Use |
|---|---|
| Why do customers pick the competitor down the street in my state? | Nearby comparison |
| How far from downtown Chicago do we still show for "emergency plumber"? | Rank grid |
| Are we getting more calls from the profile itself? | Performance metrics |
Checklist
- Choose two or three terms your customers actually use
- Keep the same grid size and center point when comparing over time
- Read grid results as samples, not guarantees
- Pair visibility checks with real actions: reviews, details, posts
