Local visibility
Rank grids and nearby comparisons for Irish local search, explained
How Irish businesses can use nearby competitor comparisons and rank grids to understand local visibility, without treating either as a guarantee.

Short answer: if you want to know how you compare with the businesses a customer actually sees nearby, use a nearby comparison. If you want to know how far from your address you still appear for one search term, use a rank grid. Neither tells you what a specific customer in Dublin, Cork, Galway or Limerick will see on their phone right now — Google's own guidance is that results depend on relevance, distance and prominence together, and all three shift by the metre.
Why "ranking" is the wrong word for Irish local search
Ireland's population is spread across a small number of larger cities and a great many towns and rural areas, so distance matters even more than in a dense city grid. A plumber based just outside Limerick might show strongly for searches inside the city and barely appear ten kilometres out — not because anything about the profile changed, but because Google is matching distance to the searcher. A single "we rank number 3" claim rarely survives contact with that reality.
Nearby competitor comparison: what it actually shows
This is simply a list of businesses in your category near you, with their public rating and review count visible. For an Irish business it's most useful for:
- Checking whether your review count is well behind the businesses customers scroll past you to find.
- Spotting competitors with noticeably more photos or a more complete profile.
- Deciding a realistic next step — usually asking every eligible customer for an honest review, not just the happy ones.
It is not a ranking and doesn't tell you your position for any search term.
Rank grid: what it actually shows
A rank grid checks the same search phrase — say "dentist Galway" — at a grid of points around a location, recording where the profile appeared at each point, at that moment. It's useful for:
- Seeing roughly how far from your address you still show up for a phrase.
- Comparing the same grid and term over time to spot a genuine trend.
It cannot predict what one customer sees (results are personalised), and it shouldn't be used to compare different terms or grid sizes against each other, or to claim one change "caused" a shift.
Choosing the right tool for the question
| Question | Tool |
|---|---|
| Why does the business two doors down get chosen over us? | Nearby comparison |
| How far outside Cork city do we still appear for "electrician"? | Rank grid |
| Are people actually calling or getting directions from our profile? | Performance metrics inside Google |
A sensible checklist
- Pick two or three phrases customers in your county genuinely use
- Keep the same grid centre and size each time you compare
- Treat grid results as samples taken at one moment, not guarantees
- Pair any visibility check with an action — reviews, updated services, a post
Where Local SEO AI helps
Competitor insights shows nearby comparisons and, once the scanning integration is activated, map grid scans kept in a separate history so the two are never confused — this is not a ranking guarantee, and results reflect a sample at the time of the check. See pricing, billed in GBP (£). For what happens once someone finds your profile, read about performance metrics, and see our Limerick local SEO guide for a city-specific starting point.
