Rank grids and nearby comparisons for Indian local search: what each shows
How rank grids and nearby competitor comparisons work for an Indian google my business profile, and which one answers which question.

Short answer: a nearby comparison shows how your gmb profile stacks up next to the businesses customers actually see around you right now; a rank grid samples where you appear for one search phrase at many points across an area. Neither promises what any single customer will see, because Google itself says results vary by relevance, distance and prominence.
In a city like Mumbai or Bengaluru, "near me" can mean two very different things depending on whether someone is standing in Andheri or Whitefield. That is exactly why a single ranking number is misleading — and why these two tools measure different things.
Nearby competitor comparison
This is a snapshot of businesses in your category and area, using public information such as star rating and review count. It is useful for:
- Judging whether your rating and review volume look competitive against the two or three businesses customers are most likely to compare you with.
- Spotting a gap — for example, a nearby clinic with far more recent reviews than yours, suggesting your team should be asking more consistently (see our guide on asking for reviews).
- Understanding your category peer group, since Google groups similar businesses together when it decides who competes for the same search.
It does not tell you where you rank for any specific search term, and it says nothing about businesses outside your immediate area.
Rank grid
A rank grid tests one search phrase — say, "wedding photographer" — from many points spread across a state or metro area, and records where your profile appears at each point. It is useful for:
- Seeing how far your visibility reaches beyond your own neighbourhood — relevant for a service that travels, like a caterer covering several parts of a state.
- Comparing visibility for different search phrases customers actually use, rather than one you assume they use.
- Noticing whether visibility drops sharply outside a certain radius, which often points to a service-area setup issue rather than a ranking problem — see our guide on services and service areas.
It does not reflect personalised results, and Google does not publish an official "rank" — grid tools are estimates built by sampling, not a number Google itself reports.
Choosing between them
Use a nearby comparison when the question is "how do I look compared with who's already in front of the customer?" Use a rank grid when the question is "how far does my visibility actually extend?" Many businesses that also list on Justdial or IndiaMART find the nearby comparison closer to what those directories already show them, while a rank grid answers something neither directory can.
What neither tool can promise
No ranking tool, including any offered inside Local SEO AI, can guarantee a position on Google — India's Bureau of Indian Standards guidance on online consumer information (IS 19000:2022) reflects a broader expectation that businesses represent themselves and their claims accurately, and that includes not promising ranking outcomes to customers of a tool.
Local SEO AI is software, not a Google partner, that helps businesses across Hyderabad and Chennai track these signals over time; live Google connection is awaiting approval, so current numbers should be read alongside your own Google account.
