Services and Service Areas: Setting Up a US Google Business Profile Correctly

List services in the words customers actually use with a short description, and set up correctly as a storefront (shows address), service-area (hides address, lists areas covered) or hybrid business (does both). Only list areas you genuinely serve, remove services you no longer offer, and keep prices you're happy to honour.

Short answer: list the services customers actually book, described the way they'd say it on the phone, with a short description for each. If you travel to customers instead of (or in addition to) receiving them at an address, set service areas by ZIP code or city that reflect where you truly work, and hide your address if customers never visit it.

What should you know about services?

Services spell out exactly what you do within your category. An HVAC contractor might list furnace repair, AC installation and duct cleaning as separate services rather than one vague line.

How to write them well:

  1. Use the exact words customers use on the phone, not internal jargon.
  2. Add a one- or two-sentence description: what's included, and who it's for.
  3. Add a price or "from" price only if you're prepared to honor it.
  4. Remove services you no longer actually offer.

How do you pick the right type: storefront, service-area or hybrid?

Google recognizes three setups:

  • Storefront: customers come to you. Show your street address.
  • Service-area business: you go to customers — a landscaper or mobile detailer, for example. Hide the address if customers never visit it, and set service areas instead.
  • Hybrid: both apply. Show the address and also set service areas.

Choosing service areas that hold up

  • Pick towns, cities or ZIP codes you genuinely cover, not an aspirational radius.
  • Google's help page explains reasonable limits on how far a service area should extend — don't list a state you'd actually turn down work in.
  • Service areas describe where you work; they aren't a shortcut to appearing in a city you don't actually serve, and misrepresenting this breaks Google's guidelines.

What are common mistakes?

  • Showing a home address customers were never meant to visit.
  • One vague catch-all service called "General work."
  • Copying a competitor's service list instead of describing your actual offer.

What's the checklist?

  • Business type set correctly (storefront, service-area or hybrid)
  • Address hidden if customers don't visit it
  • Service areas match the ZIP codes or states you actually work in
  • Each service has a clear, honest description
  • Any listed prices are ones you'll actually honor

Where does Local SEO AI help?

The business profile workspace keeps services, hours, attributes and photos together in one place and flags gaps before they cost you a call. You can also store product and service details once and reuse them when drafting AI content — this catalogue supports content creation; it's not a live sync with Google's own product listings, and Local SEO AI remains software rather than a Google partner. Next, review your profile's attributes, or check local guidance for Austin and Chicago service businesses. See pricing, billed in GBP (£).

For wider marketing guidance aimed at US small businesses, the U.S. Small Business Administration's marketing and sales guide is a useful, free starting point.

How Local SEO AI does this for you

Local SEO AI's keywords power your review replies, post images and weekly articles, helping the way you describe your services stay consistent with what's listed on your profile. The Map check also shows your map position across Nearby, Local or Wide ranges, which is useful for seeing how your service area choices relate to where you actually appear.

Frequently asked questions

Should I show my home address if customers don't visit me there?

No. If customers do not visit your location, hide the address and set service areas to describe where you actually work instead.

How many service areas can I set?

Google's help page sets limits on how far service areas can extend, so list only the towns, cities or postcode areas you genuinely serve.

What's the difference between a storefront and a service-area business?

A storefront business has customers visiting it and shows its address, while a service-area business travels to customers and typically hides its address.

Can service areas help me appear in towns I don't actually serve?

No. Service areas should describe where you really work, not act as a way to appear in places you don't serve.
