Why is my Google review not showing? Causes and what to check

The common reasons a Google review is missing or delayed, what to check step by step, and how to keep asking for genuine reviews fairly.

If a Google review isn't showing on your Business Profile, the most likely reasons are that it is still being checked, it was removed because it may break Google's content policy, or it is only visible to the person who wrote it for now. Google's help page on missing or delayed reviews explains these cases. In most situations, the practical fix is to wait a few days, check the policy, and keep asking every customer for reviews in the same way.

This guide explains why reviews go missing, what you can check, and what not to do.

Common reasons a review isn't showing

1. It is still being checked. Google checks new reviews before and after they appear. Some reviews show within minutes; others can take several days. A review that appears for the writer but not for others may still be in this state.

2. It may break Google's content policy. Google removes reviews it believes break its policy. The Maps user contributed content policy lists what isn't allowed, including fake engagement, off-topic content, conflicts of interest and offensive content. Reviews written by staff, family or people paid or rewarded for a positive review are not allowed.

3. It came from an unusual pattern. Many reviews arriving in a short burst, reviews from the same device or network, or reviews prompted in a way that looks like gating can be filtered. Our guide on asking for reviews without gating explains how to ask everyone in a fair way.

4. The customer is looking in the wrong place. Reviews may be sorted by "most relevant" rather than "newest", so a new review can be further down the list than expected. The customer may also have reviewed a different profile with a similar name.

5. The review was edited or deleted by the writer. Reviewers can change or remove their own reviews at any time.

What to check, step by step

  1. Ask the customer when they posted it and which Google account they used. Waiting a few days before worrying is sensible.
  2. Sort reviews by newest on your profile, and search for the reviewer's name.
  3. Confirm the profile. Make sure the review is on your profile and not a duplicate or a nearby business.
  4. Read Google's policy with the review in mind. If it mentions staff by name, includes links or phone numbers, or is off-topic, it may have been removed.
  5. Look at how you ask. If you only send review links to customers you think are happy, change that and ask all eligible customers consistently.

What not to do

  • Don't ask the customer to post the same review again and again. Repeated posts can look like unusual activity.
  • Don't offer discounts, gifts or entries into a prize draw in return for reviews. In the UK, the CMA has published guidance on fake and incentivised reviews.
  • Don't write reviews for your own business or ask staff to. This breaks Google's policy.

When a review you want removed *is* showing

This is a different problem. You can report a review that breaks policy, but you cannot remove a genuine review simply because it is negative. Our guide to negative or fake reviews covers reporting and replying.

Keep a steady flow of genuine reviews

A missing review is frustrating, but a steady, fair routine matters more than any single review. Reply to reviews that do appear. Our guide on replying to Google reviews has a simple structure you can reuse.

How Local SEO AI can help

In Local SEO AI, review management brings your reviews into one inbox so you can see which need a reply, and review requests gives you QR codes, NFC cards and branded links so you can ask every customer in the same way. Clicks on those links are tracked separately and are not the same as submitted reviews. The software cannot restore a review Google has removed. The live Google connection is still awaiting approval.
